Free Big Five Personality Test
This is a free Big Five personality test built for founders. It scores all five Big Five traits, openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and emotional stability, from 0 to 100, and takes about 10 minutes. It asks 20 adaptive questions in your own words instead of the 60 to 120 fixed statements a research inventory uses, so it is a structured read on your tendencies rather than a validated clinical measure. It then adds what a general Big Five test leaves out: nine traits that matter when you build a company, and the closest of 30 famous founders.

The Five Traits, One Sentence Each
The Big Five is five scales, not five boxes. You sit somewhere along each one, and the interesting part is usually how far. Emotional stability is the same dimension research reports in reverse as neuroticism.
Openness to experience
How strongly you are drawn to new ideas, abstraction and things nobody has tried yet.
- Scoring high
- You reach for the unproven version and get bored of the solved problem.
- Scoring low
- You prefer the method that already works and distrust novelty for its own sake.
Conscientiousness
How reliably you plan, organise and finish what you start.
- Scoring high
- You keep commitments and close loops without being chased.
- Scoring low
- You move on intuition and leave the admin trailing behind you.
Extraversion
Where your energy comes from, and how much of it you spend on other people.
- Scoring high
- A room of strangers leaves you charged up rather than drained.
- Scoring low
- You do your best thinking alone and ration your social hours.
Agreeableness
How far you go to keep the peace when you disagree with someone.
- Scoring high
- You look for the arrangement everyone can live with.
- Scoring low
- You say the unwelcome thing and accept the friction that follows.
Emotional stability
How steady you stay when things go badly, the reverse of what research calls neuroticism.
- Scoring high
- Bad weeks move you less than they move the people around you.
- Scoring low
- You feel setbacks hard, and you notice risk early because of it.
What a Big Five Score Can and Cannot Tell You
Worth reading before any personality test, including this one. The sources for every figure below are listed at the end of the page.
It is the model research actually uses
The Big Five is the standard structure in academic personality research: five broad dimensions that most personality questionnaires turn out to measure some rotation of. That is why almost every serious instrument, including ours, reports these five and not a set of invented dimensions.
It describes tendencies, not outcomes
The Zhao and Seibert meta-analysis (Journal of Applied Psychology, 2006) compared entrepreneurs with managers and found entrepreneurs higher on conscientiousness and openness and lower on agreeableness and neuroticism, with no difference on extraversion. It also found each individual effect small, with a moderate multivariate relationship of R = .37. Read that as a tilt in the odds, never as a forecast about you.
A type is not a score
Big Five results are five positions on five scales. A 16-type label is a set of cut-offs laid over scales like these, which throws away how far along each one you sit. We report the scores and then translate them into an MBTI type as a convenience, so you keep both.
What ours cannot do
It is not a clinical or hiring instrument, and we have published no reliability or test-retest figures for it, because we have not run those studies. It scores free text with a language model rather than counting Likert answers, so two sittings can differ more than they would on a fixed inventory. If you need a validated score, take the IPIP-NEO-120 or the BFI-2 below; if you want the five traits read back in founder terms with the 30-founder comparison, that is what this one is for.
Which Big Five Test Should You Take?
Three of these are free and one of them is ours. If what you need is a validated score, one of the research inventories is the better answer, and the table says so.
| Test | Format | Time | Cost | Validated instrument | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| This test (Founder Mode) | 20 adaptive questions, mostly in your own words, scored by a language model | About 10 | Free, full report included | No. No published reliability or validity figures | Reading your five traits in founder terms, with nine entrepreneurial traits and a founder comparison |
| IPIP-NEO-120 (Johnson, 2014) | 120 fixed statements, five-point accuracy scale, 30 facets | About 25 | Free, public-domain item pool | Yes. Published in the Journal of Research in Personality | The most detail you can get for free, facet by facet |
| BFI-2 (Soto and John, 2017) | 60 fixed statements, five domains and 15 facets | About 10 | Free for personal and research use, items copyrighted | Yes. Published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology | A short, properly validated score, the standard choice in research |
| Commercial Big Five reports | Fixed questionnaires, length varies by vendor | Varies | Usually a paid report | Varies by vendor, check before you pay | Workplace and team reports with support behind them |
We score free text with a language model instead of counting answers to fixed statements. That is what lets the test ask about your own situation, and it is also why we cannot claim the reliability figures a fixed inventory can. Both things are true at once, so take the one that matches what you need.
What You Get Here
A general Big Five test hands you five numbers. This one reads them back in the terms a founder actually decides in, and shows you who else scores like you.
Five trait scores, 0 to 100
Each of the five traits with a reading of what your position means, and a line quoted back from your own answers as the evidence for it.
Nine founder traits a general test skips
Risk tolerance, visionary thinking, resilience, creativity, analytical rigor, execution focus, work intensity, people orientation and sales ability, scored the same way.
The closest of 30 famous founders
Your Founder Mode score, the founder family you land in, and the founder whose profile is nearest to yours with the percentage match.
The method behind the scores is written up on the methodology page, and the aggregate distributions of everyone who has taken it are on Founder Benchmarks. Our sample is still small, and both pages say so.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Big Five personality traits?
Openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and emotional stability, the last of which research usually reports in reverse as neuroticism. They are the five broad dimensions most personality questionnaires converge on, and each is scored as a position on a scale rather than as a category you are in or out of.
Is this Big Five personality test free?
Yes. The test, your five trait scores, the nine founder traits and the full six-chapter report are free, and no card is needed. You answer every question first and sign in with Google at the end, to unlock and keep the report.
How long does the test take?
About 10 minutes, for 20 questions. Each question is chosen from your earlier answers, so it spends its questions on the parts of your profile that are still unclear instead of asking you 120 fixed statements.
Is this test scientifically validated?
No, and we will not claim otherwise. It is built on the Big Five model, which is well validated, but this particular instrument has no published reliability, test-retest or construct-validity figures, because we have not run those studies. For a validated score, take the IPIP-NEO-120 or the BFI-2. This test is for reading the five traits back in founder terms.
How accurate is a Big Five test?
A validated Big Five inventory measures your traits reliably; what it cannot do is predict a specific outcome for you. In the Zhao and Seibert meta-analysis of 2006 the individual trait differences between entrepreneurs and managers were small, with a moderate multivariate relationship of R = .37. So the traits shift the odds, and plenty of people succeed from every corner of the model.
What is the difference between the Big Five and the Myers-Briggs test?
The Big Five gives you five scores on five scales. A Myers-Briggs style test gives you one of 16 type labels, which is a set of cut-offs applied to similar underlying scales, so two people on either side of a boundary get different labels for nearly identical answers. This test reports the five scores and also translates them into an MBTI type, so you get the detail and the label.
Which Big Five traits do entrepreneurs score highest on?
In the Zhao and Seibert meta-analysis of 2006, entrepreneurs scored higher than managers on conscientiousness and openness to experience, lower on agreeableness and neuroticism, and no different on extraversion. The effects for each individual trait were small, so none of them is a membership test for founding a company.
Do I need an account to take it?
Not to take it. You answer all the questions without signing in, and you see your Founder Mode score and your founder match as soon as you finish. Signing in with Google at that point unlocks the written report and saves it, so you can come back to it and send it to a co-founder.
